Wake Forest gets closer to the ACC championship game

With the win over Virginia this weekend, Wake Forest is in a position to win the Atlantic division of the ACC depending on how certain games go their way. They do not control their own destiny. With the lost to Maryland earlier, the Deacons need to one game up on the Terps in conference games as Maryland has the tie breaker. If there is any game that Wake needs to root for Florida State, it will be that the game between Maryland and Florida State in two week because Wake holds the tiebreaker on the Seminoles courtesy of Wake’s 12-6 win in the early part of the season.
Of course, the team still has to its part with upcoming conference games against Boston College and NC State. Wake closes the season with a non-conference games against Vanderbilt. But the 28-17 win over Virginia was encouraging as the offence put together some decent drives in the first half with the hybrid offense the team is now using with the Power I running formation in conjunction with a spread receiving corps. Brandon Pendergrass has a good outing with his first 100+ yard game and a touchdown. Sam Swank is still out but Shane Popham has settled down now and is proving to be a good substitute.
With a conference that seems to recycle division leaders every week, Wake Forest can not take anything for granted and even though they are Bowl -Eligible now with 6 wins, there is no guarantee that they will get a bowl invitation when 9 teams in the ACC also have reached that threshold.
