Getting close to the end

Obama meets the 75,000 people in Portland OregonOne day out from the next primary date with Oregon and Kentucky next on the calendar. By all poll accounts, Hillary Clinton should do extremely well in Kentucky with Barack Obama doing well in Oregon. However, her margin in Kentucky appears to be much more than Oregon’s which well give her the overall edge in delegates for the night but at best it will be somewhere between 3-7 net. With his lead on her about 174 when factoring pledged and superdelegates, he can afford to give up a few on his lead as he continues accumulating the delegates.

So it will be a draw overall and Clinton will get no closer to her ambition of winning the nomination as according to the rules. By all accounts, she has accepted this position by refraining from any personal attacks directly on Obama. She instead seems to be more focused on generating more turnout on her behalf to pump up the overall vote total as she tries to promote her candidacy on popular vote totals on terms more favorable to herself.

After tomorrow, just three more. However, Puerto Rico, though not a state that comes into play in November, may be important not just for the 55 delegates it has but also that it will be a good testing ground for Obama in his Hispanic outreach efforts though again the demographics in Puerto Rico does not match the Hispanic demographics in the United States which is mostly Mexican based.

This is all just semantics though. Obama has a solid grip on the nomination and unless something dramatic happens between now and August, he is the nominee and accordingly he is acting like one by switching into general election mode. He is showing what is capable of in the general election by hitting on McCain and Bush for their attack on him. Obama will not be Swiftboated here and that is comforting to know. Financially, he looks to be in great shape as well.

It is all coming together now. June 3rd can not come soon enough to put some closure to this nomination process for the Democratic Party.
