Sports and more sports

Second round of NHL playoffs are going to begin tonight. To me it is all about the Montreal Canadiens as they are the last Canadian team left in the playoffs. Ottawa is not going to return to the finals this year (so too is the champions from Anaheim). So the team that I once love to hate growing up in Newfoundland is now the flag bearer for the rest of the nation. It is going to be a tough series against the Philadelphia Flyers but I think they will prevail.

NBA basketball playoffs are also underway but as I do not follow the NBA, it really does not matter to me what is going on. Unless Toronto gets deep into the playoffs then it will be a different story.

So to with baseball… could not really care less. However, since my parents are here, I might try to take them to the local baseball team games (Winston-Salem Warthogs). Games are cheap and they are a nice way to pass the day away though the team is now on a road trip returning on the first weekend in May.

On a photo journey through downtown Winston, I managed to take a few shots of the new stadium being downtown. Not too much see right now but seeing it take form allows me to see how dominant this site is going to be next year. Pictures to be posted soon.

We are just four months out from the Summer Olympic Games. Ignoring all of the torch run news, unrest in Tibet and the ongoing problem with pollution in the region, these games look halfway decent for Canada in terms of its potential performance. It will not be too hard to improve on the sub-par performance of the team in 2004. But with the country more focused on being a Winter Games power, perhaps 15-20 medals is what Canada should expect from now on with concentrations on key strength events like rowing and diving. Swimming may actually produce medals this year for a change in a response to the past where seemingly most medals that Canada won in the Summer Games were in the pool.

Hopefully by July, I will be able to start posting seriously on the games and the athletes for Canada in much the way I did for the 2006 Winter Games.

Finally, Wake Forest just wrapped up its spring training season and with all of the line adjustments for the various players who are moving on, things look promising for the fall though missing such stalwarts like Steve Justice and Ken Moore are always hard to replace at the level of skill they brought to their position.
